NOTICE OF SOUTH EASTERN CIRCUIT BAR MESS COMMITTEE GENERAL MEMBER AND OFFICER ELECTIONS 2018
 
Nominations to positions on the General Committee of the Circuit, and of the following ‘Officer’ posts: 

Leader of the Circuit
2nd Assistant Junior

The Circuit Committee is consulted on all matters of significance to the Bar.  I set out below the election procedures and key dates, together with some information about what the posts entail.
 
General Committee 
Every paid-up member of the Circuit is eligible to stand for election as a General Member of the Circuit Committee for a term of three years. Members are elected annually, 2 of whom must be less than 10 years’ Call at the date of election.
 
General Members are expected to attend the Committee meetings, of which there are usually 6 a year, and the various social engagements.  General Members are also entitled to vote as part of the Electoral Circuit in the Circuit Officer elections (see below).
 
Candidates for any post must be nominated in writing or by email to the SEC Administrator by another current member of the Circuit, who must confirm in their nomination that they are a current ‘paid up’ member, and, in addition, the candidate must consent in writing/email to his/her name being put forward and confirm his/her date of Call.
 
Nominations and consents, must be received by the Circuit Administrator, Aaron Dolan, at: The South Eastern Circuit, Suite 23, 30 St Dunstan’s Street, Canterbury, Kent, CT2 8HG, Email: aaron.dolan@southeastcircuit.org.uk by 17.00 on Friday 19th  October 2018.
 
The election of the candidates is held by ballot (ballot papers will be emailed out after the nominations have been received) of all members of the Circuit and closes at 17.00 on Friday 2nd November 2018.
 
Circuit Officers
Elections are required for the position of Leader and 2nd Assistant Junior. 
 
Every paid-up Queen's Counsel member of the Circuit is eligible to stand for Leader and shall hold office for a term of two years.  
 
The Leader of the Circuit plays a vital role in ensuring that those barristers practising in London and the South East have access to support, advice and representation. 
 
Candidates for this post must be nominated in writing or by email to the SEC Administrator by another current member of the Circuit, who must confirm in their nomination that they are a current ‘paid up’ member, and, in addition, the candidate must consent in writing/email to his/her name being put forward and confirm his/her date of Call.  Those wishing to stand for election are also invited to submit, a statement of up to 500 words.  The statements will be annexed to the ballot papers and will therefore will be available to all members of the ‘Circuit.
 
The post of 2nd Assistant Junior is each held for a term of one year.  All junior members of the Circuit are eligible to apply, the elected individual will be expected to serve as 1st Junior and then Junior in the following years.  The Junior is required to act as secretary to the Circuit Committee, compiling agendas and minutes of meetings.  
 
Candidates for this post must be nominated in writing (a scanned PDF emailed to the SEC Administrator is acceptable)by another current member of the Circuit, who must confirm in their nomination that they are a current ‘paid up’ member, and, in addition, the candidate must consent in writing/emailto his/her name being put forward.

The election of the candidates will be held following the Circuit AGM on Wednesday 14th November 2018.  The election is by the ‘Circuit’ of the South Eastern Circuit General Committee, as defined in the Constitution of the South Eastern Circuit.  
 
Those who are eligible to vote but are not present at the meeting may vote by postal ballot (ballot papers will be sent out to those eligible to vote after the nominations have been received) provided their vote is received by email to the Circuit Office by 13.00 on Wednesday 14th November 2018.
